Medicare Advantage

Medicare insurance provides lots of benefits for senior citizens. However, Medicare insurance is not complete. If you need more protection and support during distress, you have to look for Medicare advantage plans. Everyone buys insurance to reduce out of pocket expenses at a later point of time. This is possible only if you are provided the coverage you actually need. Sometimes, you may think that certain covers are insignificant at this point of time, but later, you may regret for your decision. It is important that you educate yourself about Medicare advantage plans so that you make the right decision.

To buy Medicare advantage plan, you must have part A and part B Medicare plans. You must pay the premium for part B plan to enroll into the Medicare advantage plan. After buying Medicare advantage plan, you have to pay for the advantage plan as well. A number of private insurance companies sell Medicare advantage plans with various benefits. Depending on the plan and its cover, the average monthly premium differs. Similarly, co-payments also differ with the plan you choose.

Types of Medicare Advantage Plans:

Medicare heath maintenance organization (HMO) plan provides prescription coverage. This saves you money for the prescription drugs. Depending on the company providing insurance coverage, you have to choose a primary doctor. Your health is taken care of by the doctors in the HMO network of the company selling insurance. When you need specialist attention, your primary doctor will refer the specialist.

Preferred provider organization (PPO) plan also covers prescription drugs. Moreover, there is no need to specify a primary doctor. When you need medical attention, you can go to any hospital and doctor you think is the best for your problem. You can directly go to a specialist without any reference letter.

Provider fee for service (PFFS) plan does not cover prescription drugs. However, you can get this additional coverage by enrolling in Medicare prescription drug plan in addition to PFFS. In PFFS too, you don’t have to choose any primary doctor. You can go to any hospital or doctor where PFFS is accepted.

Medicare special needs (MSN) plans are suitable if you have medical conditions that need expensive and continuous care and attention. People with chronic diseases and poor health status go for this plan to save money.

The premium you have to pay for Medicare advantage plans purely depends on the plan you choose. If you go for plans with maximum coverage, you have to pay more money as premium. When you choose Medicare advantage plans suitable for you, you have to consider the treatment you may need and doctors you may like. Certain plans allow you to restrict your visits to primary doctor alone. You have to know what you want in order to choose a plan appropriate for you.

Some people think that Medicare Advantage plans are not needed as the part A and part B Medicare plans provide necessary coverage. Even though Medicare advantage plans are not needed for every senior citizen, buying one such plan will surely save you a lot of money when your health is seriously affected in the future.
